Yes, would probably be better not to do this at all, but the whole idea with the alternates is that there are domesticated forms of the pokemon as well, simply because we human have a tendency to - guide beings in the direction we want. Considering this is the pokeverse, let's just conclude that the domesticated most likely have an easier and more protected life than both wild pokemon and pokemon that are caught in the wild and used by trainers.
This said, most domesticated pokemon won't evolve as easily, their final form in most cases simply not being reached as - often. This is a direct consequence of the way human have tampered with the species, though few of these mon seem to even care about this lack in their growth. As an example, Mareep rarely go past the Flaaffy stage in their growth, unless they are more aggressive males which will fight with other males for females.
Pokemon kept for either competitions or other more complex or hard tasks will more often either have a rushed growth to the final stage, or in the case of race/competition Ponytas, will be raised slowly and focused to a point where they are not only ready to evolve naturally, but also are fully trained and able. During this phase, the pokemon is monitored by its trainer to see if it has potential or not for its - purpose. If not, there are obviously other ways to give the pokemon a good life. It is often seen that Growlithe with flawed potential for police-dogs are sold or given away as house pets (they are brilliant with children due to their puppy-like nature) or as a starter pokemon for children not being able to reach a pokemon professor or other specialists for their starter.
